FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is chiropody?

Chiropody is a branch of medical science that involves the assessment, management and prevention of diseases and disorders of the foot and lower limb. Foot injuries and deformities can limit mobility, and affect your health and quality of life. Chiropodists are essential members of the interprofessional healthcare team. The role of chiropodists is to maintain and improve patient mobility, alleviate foot pain, and provide health education. Chiropodists are skilled in assessing their patient’s needs, and managing both acute and chronic conditions. Chiropodists provide care to a wide range of patients, which include but is not limited to nail care, corn and callus removal, warts, wounds, surgeries, orthotics and compression socks.

What is the difference between a chiropodist and podiatrist?

Chiropodists and podiatrists are the only recognized and regulated foot specialists in Ontario. The main difference between the two is where they were trained and educated. Practitioners who are educated in the US or came to Ontario before 1993 are known as podiatrists, while those trained in Ontario or came to Ontario after 1993 are called chiropodists. Chiropodists are essential members of the interprofessional healthcare team. The role of chiropodists is to maintain and improve patient mobility, alleviate foot pain, and provide health education. Do I need a doctor’s referral to see the chiropodist?

No, referrals from a physician or other health care provider are not necessary to see the chiropodist. You can call us at (647) 258-6769 for our Scarborough location or (437) 290-4563 for our Forest Hill location to book an appointment. You can also book online to schedule an appointment.

Can I walk-in or should I book an appointment?

We recommend booking an appointment to allow us to complete a thorough assessment and treatment of your foot and ankle problems, and ensure all your needs are taken care of. You can call us at (647) 258-6769 for our Scarborough location or (437) 290-4563 for our Forest Hill location to book an appointment. You can also book online to schedule an appointment.

What can I expect at my first appointment?

During your first appointment, you will fill out a medical history and consent form, which will be reviewed with the chiropodist. A complete foot and ankle assessment will be conducted, followed by a discussion of appropriate treatment options. Treatment will be performed and a follow up appointment will be scheduled as necessary to provide the best care for your feet. Please be sure to bring a list of your current medications, any previous orthotics, and some of your frequently worn shoes to your first visit.

Are chiropody services covered under OHIP?

Unfortunately, chiropody services and products are not covered under OHIP. This is similar to services provided by other health care professionals such as dentists, chiropractors, physiotherapists and registered massage therapists. However, many Extended Health Insurance plans offered by employers do cover chiropody services. An official receipt will be provided to you during your visit for insurance reimbursement or income tax purposes. Depending on your insurance provider and plan we may be able to direct bill for certain services. You may bring in more detailed information about your insurance coverage during your visit so we can determine whether direct billing is possible.

What forms of payment do you accept?

Payments can be made with cash, debit or all types of credit cards. Step Right Foot Clinic offers direct billing to most insurance companies with a few exceptions. Notably, Sunlife and Equitable Life prefer that you submit your invoices directly to them using their app/website portal. Your invoice will be provided to you and you can submit your claim online or by mail. Please call us at (647) 258-6769 for our Scarborough location or (437) 290-4563 for our Forest Hill locatio if you have any questions or concerns. We ask that you please check with your insurance provider directly for the details of your benefits, including deductibles, co-pays and/or if a prescription is required.

How do I know if chiropody services are covered by my Extended Health Insurance plan?

Extended Health Insurance plans vary between individuals as to the specific services and products that are covered. Many third-party insurance companies offer full or partial coverage for chiropody services, custom made orthotics and other medical items such as compression stockings and stock-item orthopedic shoes. We strongly recommend that you contact your insurance provider or HR department to determine your eligibility for chiropody services. Our services are usually listed under Paramedical Services, while custom made orthotics and compression socks are often listed under Medical Equipment or Orthopedic Supplies. SERVICE YOU CAN TRUST

What our patients are saying about us

Recently visited this clinic. Clean, professional, and very thorough assessments. They figured out my plantar fasciitis from my day-to-day and helped me come up with a plan. A couple weeks later, i noticed all the pain was gone. Would highly recommend.
